While researching for the project I came across some reference material for Bishops Water Distillery, a whiskey distillery which was once located directly behind The Sky & the Ground. As the shape of the bottles used were quite distinctive compared to the bottles of today, I thought this would be a good opportunity to bring a sense of tradition into the logo design. The typography and colour palette is based off of the many enamel signs that hang on the pub exterior.
For the logo mark, I felt this needed to feel quite organic. The Sky & the Ground is primarily a traditional bar, but it is also constantly evolving. The idea of using the logo as a frame on the postcards came about while thinking of ways to promote the bar itself. Many of the customers that frequent the pub are artists and musicians, so the initial idea was to give a number of artists this frame to fill. The finished designs would then be displayed at an exhibition held in the bar, with the opportunity to get the works printed as promotional postcards.
